One of a kind & collector’s item. Aromatische neus met overtuigende aroma’s van rijpe peer, citrus, marsepein en marmelade op toast. De mondinzet is marsanne gedreven, licht vettig, boordevol geel-orange fruit (rijpe peer en abrikoos) en associaties amandelspijs. In de mondontwikkeling neemt de complexiteit toe, met kruidige (anijs) en frisse elementen (munt, citrus) die de wijn een zekere spanning geven. De afdronk biedt mineraliteit en een opvallende frisheid. Een prachtige wijn met enorme potentie. De complexiteit is nu nog wat ingekapseld: de wijn zal naar verwachting begin 2024 enigszins op dronk zijn. Karafferen is de komende jaren aan te raden. Een absolute eetwijn en wie 5-6 jaar extra geduld heeft, wordt zeer zeker beloond. [december 2022]
De wijngaarden (9 hectare) van de gebroeders Pierre en Jean Gonon liggen verspreid over de gemeenten Mauves en Tournon. Daarnaast bewerken zij een prachtig terroir van Raymond Trollat (een toonaangevende ‘oude stijl’ wijnproducent van Saint-Joseph in ruste) in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Alle wijngaarden worden organisch bewerkt, hetgeen een arbeidsintensieve en fysiek zware klus is op de hellingen. Deze vlijt resulteert in twee prachtige cuvées (één rood en één wit) die m.i. tot de beste van de appellatie kunnen worden gerekend. Vader Pierre Gonon, oprichter van dit familiebedrijf, plantte in 1958 marsanne aan op een voor witte wijn unieke terroir in Tournon en heeft daarmee een belangrijke basis gelegd voor de voortreffelijke witte cuvée Les Oliviers. De wijnen van Domaine Pierre Gonon zijn sinds 2013 biologisch gecertificeerd.
Jean Gonon: “It’s a rootsy wine more than a fruited one – it has gentian, bitter notes; at this stage, there’s usually a more exuberant fruiting, such as apricot. We started the harvest on 27 August – only 2003 had been earlier.”
DrinkRhone.com/John Livingston: “There’s great style in the bouquet, has classy airborne features, brioche bread, fine orange, discreet pear, good variety and detail. The palate offers more firm, compact gras richness, is close-knit, well couched on dried fruits, a hint of white raisin. It bears natural freshness, is a potentially stylish St Jo blanc, with gradual opening likely. The length is solid. It has character, is out of the mainstream, smoky, with a waxen note on the finish. Wine Advocate / Joe Czerwinski: “Just blended the day before my visit, the 2020 Saint Joseph les Oliviers Blanc is roughly 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne. For only the second time in the domaine’s history, the grapes were picked in August (the other vintage where this happened was 2003), yet the wine retains a terrific zesty freshness that balances its full-bodied nature and honeyed pear and melon flavors. It should drink well on release and for the next several years. [Januiary 2022]
Decanter: “Vibrant nectarine notes on the nose, you just know this is going to have some tangy acidity on the palate even before you taste it. Medium-bodied, not quite so opulent this year, a touch of citrus flavour and snappy, citrusy acidity. Rich mango on the palate, it’s mineral and long, with great cut and precision. There is a touch of glycerol roundness on the finish. Great balance here this year. Fermented in fûts and old barriques, it also spends a year on the lees.” [September 2021]
Jeb Dunnuck: “Blended with 5% Roussanne, the 2020 Saint Joseph Les Oliviers Blanc shines on all accounts, and for a hot vintage, it holds onto a beautiful sense of purity and freshness. Golden apples, almond paste, brioche, and crushed stone define the bouquet, and it’s medium-bodied on the palate, with an Hermitage-like sense of structure and concentration.” [December 2022]
