Domaine Faury is located in the tiny hamlet of Ribaudy on the upper slopes of Chavanay. Until 1980s, wine was sold here in bulk, primarily to the local population, and fruit (peaches and cherries) were also grown here. Father Philippe Faury ( the chairman of the Syndicat Condrieu until 2004) took a more international approach, and since 2006, his son Lionel (3rd generation) has taken over the business. Lionel is typical of the ‘new generation’, who trained as oenologists and then worked as apprentices in other wine-growing areas, including California.The domain, which started in 1979 with only 2.5 hectares, now encompasses 17 hectares, a portion of which was recently acquired from a cousin. The Saint-Joseph vineyards (8.5 ha) lie below the village of Chavanay; the Condrieu vineyards (3.3 ha) are situated around the house at La Ribaudy and Peyrolland, and the Côte-Rôtie vineyards (1.7 ha) are further to the east in the direction of Ampuis. A further 3.5 ha of vineyards are planted in the hinterland of the Pilat plateau, where they serve as excellent basis for a series of outstanding IGP Collines Rhodaniennes wines.Lionel’s objective is ensure that the wines express the diversity of the soils as much as possible. The domain is known for its purity and elegance. With an eye for detail, respect for nature, and a refusal to be ruled by time pressure, this is artisan wine (pigéage is still done by foot). A conscious decision was made to limit the use of new wood. This domain is somewhat overshadowed by the bigger names, but each and every one the wines is made with care, and are reasonably affordable.
