Home / Assortment / Southern Rhone / Rasteau / Domaine des Escaravailles La Ponce Rasteau 2016
Attractive nose of blue and black berries, slightly floral and smoky. Fruit (forest berries) and garrigues are dominate in the taste, with some licorice in the back. The grenache offers a nice roundness, yet the juices are lively. The syrah provides structure and brings a nice tension and directness to the wine. The aftertaste is long and energetic. This full-bodied wine is well balanced: alcohol, acidity and tannine wise. Will go well with meat. La Ponce can age well (especially this great vintage 2016) and will develop impressively. We give her more years than the producer. This cuvée is a nice piece of craftsman skills of Gilles Ferran, the more when taken the price into consideration. [March 2020]
Joe Czerwinski/Wine Advocate: “My favorite of the scarab beetle wines (that’s the translation of Escaravailles) was the 2016 Rasteau la Ponce, a blend of Grenache (aged in concrete) and Syrah (aged in wood). Dried spices, cherries, and blueberries swirl together in outrageous harmony in this full-bodied, creamy-textured beauty that doesn’t lack for richness or vibrancy. It should drink well for at least another 5-7 years”. [oktober 2018]
