Tasting notes

Dark fruit, bacon, violin and peper in the nose. The taste is concentrated, met mainly (dark) fruits (blue berry, blackberry and some ripe raspberry). In the middle black olives and game flavors; the finale slightly roasted, with soft tanins. Still very nice drinking in this stage with length, broad rather than deep. [March 2019]

Wine producer
The brothers Florent and David Viale are from a family of fruit growers in Mercurol, in the heart of Crozes-Hermitage, and apricots are still their main source of income. Their father Gabriel formerly sold grapes to négociants. Once Florent became fully active in the company in 1991, they invested in a new cellar and modern equipment, and all of their wines are now marketed under their own label. The total wine-producing area is 16 hectares, divided over three parcels of land in the AOC Crozes-Hermitage (some of it on rocky hills, and some on alluvial plains), and two parcels in AOC Hermitage (1.6 hectares). They are young, dedicated winemakers who have a clear vision and wines that are equally distinctive. At Colombier, the grapes are grown organically, although they do not have certification.
Quote & Reviews

John Livingston/drinkrhone.com: “Chiselled, smoky nose, with a blackberry coulis centre – it is attractive and quite sweet, also offers raspberry and mulberry. A nutty smokiness hangs around it. The palate has an elegant, structured flow, and picks up density as it goes, ending clearly. It is appealingly wide, has quiet inner strength. It persists well.” [November 2013]

Jeb Dunnck/Wine Advocate: “The top Crozes cuvee is the 2012 Crozes Hermitage Cuvee Gaby, with is 100% Syrah that’s aged all in a combination of new and used barrels. It’s a fantastic Syrah that offers a classic, elegant and medium to full-bodied profile to go with notions of peppery herbs, olive tapenade and assorted currant-like fruit. Possessing beautiful purity, fine tannin and a no shortage of texture, drink this knockout effort over the coming 8-10 years.”
